A Bit of History

Just before I get into the history of my desire to own and live in an RV I would like to acknowledge that yes I may be putting the cart before the horse so-to-speak regarding the purchase of the RV but I am OK with it!

Now onto the history.

Back in 1988 not long after moving back home to Quesnel with a plan to take a year off from university I came across my very first motorhome magazine and after glancing through a few pages I walked out of the store with my very first copy of the Motorhome magazine.  I no longer have that copy but it sure did put a desire in my heart to set forth on an adventure in an RV.

I had all kinds of crazy ideas about buying and living in and working from an RV but they always remained ideas as I set about working and enjoying having and spending money on everything and anything my little heart desired.  Mind you I was working at McDonald's at the time and for about $4.00 per hour at that.  Years passed by and RV's disappeared from my mind for a time but not my desire to just drive and drive down the highway with no clear destination in mind.  I love the journey more than the destination.

Not until the late 1990's and a few years after moving to Vancouver did I start thinking about RV's again but purchasing the magazines and being an armchair RVer is all that I accomplished.  Soon though I started to venture out to RV dealerships and have a look at RVs and that is when a more solid idea about buying and living in an RV started taking more space in my mind and not long after meeting my partner did I realize that RVing is in my blood and a dream I have to pursue.  In 2006 I  purchased my first RV and my passion for RVing since then has grown tremendously.  I have purchased many books and DVDs on the subject of RVing and one book in particular really put the bug in me to pursue the open road and that book is RV Canada On A Dime And A Dream by Barb Rees. (Barb Rees)

In her book Barb describes how she and her husband travelled across Canada and back again selling Blackberry sauce, driftwood art and her book at farmer's markets and the like all across this beautiful country of ours.  They left their home on Vancouver Island with only $300 in their pockets and they managed to earn enough money for gas and food to travel all the way to Newfoundland and back to their Vancouver Island home.  I should mention that I think they had to get emergency money twice from their families during their travels to make surprise repairs to their RV but even with that they managed quite well to live and work from their RV and travel thousands of kilometres by working markets across the country and I say good on them for succeeding.

Now here we are in 2009 and I discovered blogs about RVers and their travels.  The first blog I read daily is Travels with Miranda (Travels) about a young woman in her thirties who picked up her life and traveled west from Quebec to pursue her dream of freedom and life on the road.  She is going into her third year of RVing I believe and being quite successful at it.  The other blog I read daily is The Adventures of Tioga and George (George)and George has been RVing since 2003 and is doing very well.  He is a cancer survivor and is now paying his around North America, now primarily Mexico through his blog and online magazine.  He allows companies to advertise on his blog and he gets paid for this service and makes thousands of dollars by doing so.  There are many more blogs but these two are my favourites and I will continue to read them with enthusiasm.  Oh, I must not leave out Brian and his rv-boondocking-the-good-life blog (Brian) as he is quite the character and he and his wife are trying their best to leave the rat race and take off in their truck and fifth wheel and live the good life.  As of March 2009 they are still trapped with their house that just cannot attract a solid buyer so I need to read a little more before I will know if they have been successful or not.

Anyway, as it stands that is my history.  2010 is a good year and if I have been a good boy you just may see me driving down the "lonesome" highway in my trusty Class C, Ms Lucille/Esmeralda.

Edith and Eugene are still in "hiding".

  1. Hi, I just found your blog through random Googling and was a bit surprised to find mine mentioned! I'm flattered. :) I look forward to exploring the pages of your blog and seeing how you make your version of this dream come true.
